Swasth Aur Mast Samaj
To transform society by reorienting education and help people develop knowledge, skills, values and behaviors needed for sustainable development. Literacy in itself is no education. Literacy is not the end of education or even the beginning. By education I mean an all-round drawing out of the best in the child and man-body, mind and spirit.
Health is the key to development, and this part health has impacted the working hours in the field, the school going children’s attendance, young women’s productivity and other issues. Curative Health is one of the solutions, and the state prgrammes have been doing their utmost in providing health care and nutrition support through three tier health programme with ASHA and ANM at village and sub-centre level and PHC and Rural Community Hospitals at the block or district level. Added to these is the AWC that is supposed to take care of the nutrition supplement, and NRC which is for emergencies during SAM. But either this is not enough or in the absence of a preventive mechanism falls short of the purpose and objective.
The root causes of health issues are:
- Sanitation and hygiene
- Lack of diversity in nutrition at home
- Non functional nature of the AWC to provide nutrition support
And Shikhar Yuva Manch has systematically planned and executed the strategies. In sanitation and hygiene, our approach was two fold: help the schools and households to construct latrines, and make available water necessary for the use of toilets, and then train the young minds about the sanitation and hygiene practices and its benefits. The children are then the change agents at homes, and they insist and provide information to their parents.
Shikhar Yuva Manch believes that a comprehensive strategy would help the health hazards and a knowledge transfer would ensure that the communities will be resource communities.
Malnutrition is very much rampant in the rural and tribal area due to the shift to mono-cropping and use of only rice and pulses (in smaller quantities). Adolescent girls face immense sexual health problems and the pregnant and lactating mothers, too, are anemic despite the AWC take away supplementary food. Shikhar Yuva Manch believes in “local solutions to local problems”, and popularized the backyard garden to increase the nutrient rich food security.
It helped and so far:
- 563 families have started backyard garden.
- Focus is on identifying and propagating locally available vegetable seeds.
- The plot is designed in such a way that the backyard garden satisfies the vegetable needs of the family for entire year.
Farmers as Resource Farmers :
Shikhar Yuva Manch believes in knowledge transfer and developing the local communities’ capacities to help each other. Mutual cooperation and collective action, which is the essence of tribal life, is the motto.
